Huge thanks to all of our wonderful water station volunteers last week…Ron Adkins, Michael Gave, Dixie and Gavin Service! The Team Transplant experience wouldn’t be what it is without all of your help!
…and a special shout out goes to Jonathon Baird, who is sitting on the sidelines this season, but has continued to show up with homemade baked goods and has enhanced our water station services immensely!

Superstars of the Week!

Let’s hear it for our Big Backyard Captains!!

Alex Cantafio, who stepped up in the last month to lead the Green Team! It was so cool to have him and his wife participate in the event with us… The shirts and green head bands totally rocked!

Jonathon Baird, the captain of Team Spare Parts…you gotta love the Farside cartoon and buttons…and, of course…you absolutely have to loooove the homemade chocolate chip macadamia nut oatmeal cookies that he brought to share after the race!
Tami Sadusky…Captain Fig! What crazy luck and how amazingly appropriate that she received a kidney transplant the weekend before the race! Luckily she had Mike “Second Fig” Anthony who was able to step in and very capably provide guidance and leadership to the team!!

Mark Scott…Who didn’t love the name Bakery Buns?? I think they had the most members on their team…unexpectedly…the Latimers from California really did show up to participate!

Shirley Schultz…Captain of the Spring Organ-izers….who…along with Janette… got so excited about competing for her team that she forgot that it was all about the pacing! Love the enthusiasm, however!
Allison Enstrom...of the Replacements….who has been juggling training, family…and having Tess follow her around with a camera all season! Thanks for also taking time to lead the Replacements!

Nicely done, everyone! Thanks for making our first attempt at team competition such a great success…. I look forward to honoring The Green Team’s efforts in MY BIG BACKYARD on June 25th at our Post-Race BBQ!!!!

Let’s hear it for our water station helpers last week...Tamar Solomon and Vanessa Whitacre! This is a repeat performance for both….and we certainly appreciate their willingness to come back and help out a second time!

….and a very special shout out to Lucky, Abby, Jack, and Scooter whose joyful unbridled (until forced to be bridled) play in Volunteer Park was a reminder of what exercise really should be all about!

Jennifer Herlihy and India…Jennifer is one of our liver transplant recipients who is featured…along with Allen Vary and Maggie Kim in the new UW Medicine marketing campaign (maybe you’ve seen the picture? http://www.uwmedicinestories.org/stories.html#story_1) and who has now done more half marathons than me! Thanks so much for taking a break from your busy training schedule (word is…she’s working on her speed this summer and shooting to improve her times in some shorter races) to help us out. It’s always fun to have you join us…and we, of course, always love a chance to catch up with India!

Susan Marx...Susan is one of our adminstrators in the transplant surgery department who occasionally shows up for a Team Transplant practice and helped with our post-race party in November. She played a key role in helping us get our cell phone back in service!!! Thanks so much staying on top of it and realizing how important it is for us to have the phone!
Mark Rosinbum…If you ever have a big pile of old fence wood sitting in your backyard, and it mysteriously disappears…well…it could be magic…or it could be Mark Rosinbum! Thanks to Mark we now have space in my backyard to celebrate after the half marathon!

Superstars of the Week!

Let’s hear it once again for our water station helpers, the Rakitas and Annie Otto! Thanks for being such reliable, consistent volunteers!

And…thanks to Ajit and Nishaant Limaye, who helped with our water station during our Gasworks/Lake Union workout. Ajit is one of our infectious disease doctors and Nishaant is his son. It was wonderful to have them join us, and we look forward to having them return for a practice next month!

More!!

Sam Patterson
Sam has now been officially appointed as one of our warm up leaders. From what I’ve seen over the past few weeks, he’s going to be an impressive addition to our crew! For those of you who haven’t been there when Sams’s shown up…it’s been pretty amazing. He actually has been getting everyoone to stretch….You don’t know what a wonderful site that is for my eyes! Sam, one of our heart recipients, has been on the team for 7-ish years now…and I can’t believe it’s taken us this long to discover this hidden talent of his! I, for one, am so totally excited that we finally did!

Jennifer Herlihy
Jen decided to sit out of the Rock’n Roll Half this year and to focus her energy on the Vancouver Half instead. Held last Sunday, Jen has nothing but raves for her experience up in Canada!

Vancouver was beautiful – in everyway! The course was gorgeous and super fun – I loved running through downtown, and the water/mountain views through Stanley Park were amazing.
The spectators were fabulous – great crowds out cheering us on.
The day could not have been more perfect – beautiful blue sunny sky, slight cool breeze; running with my great friend who always makes me forget (at least for the first 10 miles) that I’m running and not just having a Sunday morning chat with a girlfriend.

Our clock time was 2:06, chip time 2:05.
I felt good the whole run, and felt pretty good the next day!

Two thumbs up for Vancouver!!

Superstars of the Week!
Everyone who showed up last weekend and contributed to our wonderous smorgasbord of a kick-off breakfast! Here are a few of the highlights…

Allen Vary…did not disappoint. He brought one of his favorites, BACON…and I know he takes great pride in watching how quickly it disappears!
Micah Gwinn…shared his high fiber brownies (surprise, huh?…I actually think the recipe belongs to Lenore Miller) so beautifully displayed in his Team Transplant green Emil Henry cookware….
Jonathon Baird...amazed us with his culinary skills once again by contributing a delicious homemade blueberry buckle…
Harch Ooi…treated us to one of his specialties from down under–homemade cheese bread…
Lynne Sloane…brought an amazing, beautiful fruit salad full of fresh berries..
Vanessa Whitacre…whipped up the deviled eggs…My personal favorite!
Jennifer Herlihy…swung her connections to supply the coffee…

And there was so much, much more…bagels, pineapple, apples, oranges, juices, sparkling cider, breads, pastries, muffins, yoghurt (who spells this with an h??!)…I couldn’t keep track of who brought what! You all deserve a big hug and round of applause for helping our season get off to a delectable start!

Let’s hear it for the movers and shakers on this team…the ones we show off our green for…the ones who make Saturday morning practices such an uplifting place to be…Let’s hear it for our amazing transplant recipients and donors…Thanks for keeping us inspired and making our’s such a wonderful community to be a part of!

And special thanks to Mary Chi and Kevin Lin for coming out to help with water stations last week! It’s wonderful to have such enthusiastic volunteers!

—————————————————————————————————————–

And…finally…some Race day wisdom from Mr. Ron Adkins….

What has worked well for me is to continue to my normal routine as much as possible. I suggest trying to hold back a little in the beginning so that you don’t get crushed by the masses at the start. Work your way up carefully and pick up speed as soon as it feels safe to do so. People will speed by you at the start, but you can gain an edge on them at strategic points like when they stop at the port-a-potties. You should feel confident with your training… run/walk your own race. Maintain your workout speed in the beginning and push a little harder the second half of the race.

Best of luck to everyone!

Seattle Times staff reporter

Stephen A. Reynolds was a researcher who shared with his children the joy and wonder of science.

His daughter, Lindsay Reynolds, recalls how he would organize science experiments for her and her brother — charting the rise and setting of the sun for an entire year, or spreading colored construction paper on the snow to see which color would melt the snow fastest.

Mr. Reynolds craved the simple life and for years nagged his family to get rid of the TV and the family’s one car.

“I still don’t know to this day how we managed to make it through those teenage years with only one car,” said his wife, Jeannette Reynolds.

Mr. Reynolds, 59, died Nov. 2 from complications related to congenital liver disease.

Born in Colorado, he later moved to Seattle, where he earned a doctorate in oceanography from the University of Washington and where he met his wife. His career took the family to California for a time before bringing them back to the UW, where he worked as a research scientist in the Applied Physics Laboratory.

For years, Mr. Reynolds biked to work from his Ballard home, and when the kids were younger, the family rode together every Sunday. “Our form of church was going on bike rides for breakfast,” his wife said.

Mr. Reynolds helped establish a foundation to support teachers at Nathan Hale High School, where he was a volunteer and steady presence.

“As a teenager you’re self-conscious of having your dad around a lot,” his daughter said. “In retrospect, I’m so appreciative … of the example he set for community involvement.”

As his disease worsened, Mr. Reynolds was placed on a waiting list and in 2003 underwent a liver transplant. His wife believes it made him appreciate life even more, allowing him “to see the kids graduate from college — when he didn’t even think he’d be able to see them graduate from high school.”

The couple were part of Team Transplant, a volunteer program for UW transplant recipients who train for — and participate in — the Seattle Half Marathon.

Even after disability ended his employment, Mr. Reynolds continued to work on a volunteer basis, researching underwater acoustics for use primarily by the U.S. Navy.

Eric Thorsos, who worked with him for nearly 20 years, said Mr. Reynolds was not a high-profile person who attended international meetings or served as the principal investigator on projects. “But he was a high-level contributor, a key, valuable player, on many ongoing projects,” Thorsos said. “It’s awful hard when you realize he’s not going to be here anymore.”

Along with his wife and daughter, Mr. Reynolds is survived by son Lang Reynolds, of Seattle; mother, Marianne Newman, and sister, Sandee Reynolds, of Tucson, Ariz.; and stepmother, Ann Reynolds, and brother, Tom Reynolds, of Colorado.

A celebration of his life is set for 2 p.m. Friday at the UW Center for Urban Horticulture, 3501 N.E. 41st St., Seattle.

Superstars of the Week

Thanks to Patricia Ashley for helping with our water station last week. Patricia, one of our nurse managers at UWMC, has been a huge supporter of Team Transplant since the very beginning and, in fact, has participated in every Seattle Half Marathon as a team member since 2001…until this year. After running 3 halves last year…all down in San Diego…siiggh…she decided to give herself a little break this season….so wonderful that that doesn’t mean a complete break from the team! We look forward to having her resume training with us again next year!

Thanks to everyone else who helped out…Ron Adkins, Steve Miller, Ida and James Boecksteigel!
